Partnership Frontiers in Pharmacology: Launch Research Topics

As the most important part of the partnership with Frontiers in Pharmacology, the first two Research Topics for a collection of articles, proposed by HSBCP, have been launched on the website of the journal. We cordially invite you all to contribute.

Any member of HSBCP who is interested in editing a Research Topic can contact one of the HSBCP Executive Board members or the point of contact for the Frontiers Research Topic shown below for more details.

Research Topic 1

Title: The Evolving Landscape of Omics-based Biomarkers in Precision Therapeutics

Topic Editors: Georgia Ragia, Evangelia Papadimitriou, Antonis Goulas, Vangelis Manolopoulos

This Research Topic welcomes Original Research, Reviews, Mini-Reviews, Methods, Perspectives, and Clinical Trial articles on themes including:

– Pharmacogenomics and pharmacotranscriptomics for predicting drug response, dosing, toxicity, and adverse drug reactions

– Multi-omics integration and AI/machine learning approaches for biomarker discovery, validation, drug repurposing, and clinical translation

– Emerging biomarker modalities: liquid biopsy, extracellular vesicles, epigenomic, and microbiome signatures

– Companion diagnostics, stratified medicine, and regulatory pathways to clinical implementation

– Biomarkers for advanced therapeutics — including cell, gene, and RNA-based therapies

Contributions that bridge fundamental discovery and clinical application are especially encouraged, as are studies addressing underrepresented populations, pediatric and geriatric pharmacology, and implementation experience from real-world health systems.

Together with HSBCP, this collection sets out to map where omics-based biomarkers are genuinely changing patient care and where the field still has work to do.

Research Topic 2

Title: Targeting RNA Modifications as an Anti-cancer Approach

Topic Editors: Eugenia Yiannakopoulou, Andreas Papapetropoulos, Evangelia Papadimitriou, Konstantinos Xanthopoulos, Theodoros Sklaviadis

This Research Topic welcomes original research, reviews, and perspectives that address, but are not limited to, the following themes:

– Pharmacological targeting of dysregulated RNA modification enzymes (writers, erasers, readers) as a novel anticancer strategy

– Drug discovery and development of small-molecule inhibitors or activators of RNA modification machinery (e.g., ADAR, METTL3/14, FTO, ALKBH5)

– Pharmacogenomic implications of RNA modification profiles for predicting drug response and patient stratification in cancer

–  Drug resistance mechanisms driven by aberrant RNA modifications (m⁶A, m⁵C, A-to-I editing, Ψ, ac⁴C) and strategies to overcome them

– Preclinical and translational studies evaluating RNA modification–targeted compounds in cancer models, including pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and efficacy data.
